Tri­umph Park Sig­nage: Team­work Makes the Dream Work at This New Sports Complex

On any giv­en Sat­ur­day this sum­mer, there is a line of cars pulling into Tri­umph Park in Wau­kee, Iowa. Kids are pour­ing out of mini­vans and SUVs with back­packs loaded down with water bot­tles, bats, and gloves. As the kids run off to their fields, their par­ents are load­ing up wag­ons with a tow­er of col­lapsi­ble chairs, blan­kets, and cool­ers packed with snacks and Gatorade. They’re ready for a full day of cheer­ing on their lit­tle slugger.

The new 66-acre park is home to 12 soft­ball and base­ball fields, prac­tice areas, con­ces­sions, an 11-acre pond, green­spaces, trails, and a 15,000-square-foot inclu­sive play­ground. This impres­sive sports com­plex and park was designed by Con­flu­ence, a land­scape archi­tec­tur­al firm with an office in Des Moines.

Out­door Archi­tec­tur­al Signage

When the land­scape archi­tects at Con­flu­ence were ready to plan sig­nage for the Tri­umph Park out­door com­plex, they turned to us to con­sult. ​“We have a very col­lab­o­ra­tive rela­tion­ship with Con­flu­ence,” says Pat Mesch­er, Busi­ness Devel­op­ment Man­ag­er for Lat­i­tude. ​“They have very tal­ent­ed design­ers, and for this project, we took a con­sul­ta­tive approach. We did some val­ue engi­neer­ing on the designs to find mate­ri­als that would be durable, pro­duce the look they want­ed, and save them some mon­ey. The whole project was a team effort.”

The sig­na­ture look for the park signs are fab­ri­cat­ed alu­minum let­ters sit­ting on black alu­minum tres­tle-style struc­tures that wel­come vis­i­tors to the park at sev­er­al places with­in the park. The design is used on a mon­u­ment sign as well as in a 10-and-a-half-foot tall sign near the ball fields. The 20-foot wide struc­ture is the per­fect place to gath­er the team for a group pic after win­ning a big tournament.

Out­door Donor Wall Signage

One of the most impres­sive signs at the park is the donor wall. On one side of the con­ces­sions stand, there is are 6‑foot-tall let­ters spelling out Tri­umph on the wall. Ver­ti­cal alu­minum fins run across the face of the sign. Each fin stands two-inch­es off the wall and is spaced two inch­es apart, cre­at­ing a cool visu­al effect as you walk by the wall. On clos­er inspec­tion you’ll see that donor names have been applied to the fins in vinyl. This design offers plen­ty of space to add donor names in the future. Below the sign, the major donors are list­ed on con­crete blocks.

Wayfind­ing Sig­nage at the Ballpark

“With such a big space, wayfind­ing sig­nage was impor­tant,” Mesch­er says. ​“Con­flu­ence designed the flag-mount­ed direc­tion­al signs and field mark­ers, and deter­mined where all the signs should go. We rec­om­mend­ed mate­ri­als that would ease instal­la­tion, deter van­dal­ism, and be durable enough to with­stand Iowa weath­er.” The col­lab­o­ra­tive approach pro­duced styl­ish signs that are also hard­work­ing enough to direct fam­i­lies to the right field for years to come.

“It sounds like a cliché, but this was tru­ly a team effort,” Mesch­er says. ​“Con­flu­ence has such tal­ent­ed land­scape archi­tec­tur­al design­ers, we were able to act like a con­sul­tant on their team. We sug­gest­ed some mate­ri­als and hard­ware options that made things more durable or cost engi­neered the signs, and then we pro­duced the dynam­ic signs they envi­sioned. It real­ly was a coop­er­a­tive experience.”
